Student Work in the Core
Student Self-Portraits
Core 110 (Concepts of the Self), a required course for first year students, culminates in the creation of individual self-portraits. The self-portrait project is unique in that it requires students to demonstrate a deep understanding and application of course material from multiple disciplines, including Psychology, Neuroscience, Literature and Art. While much of the students' learning is captured in their accompanying written work, the self-portrait images here provide a visual representation of the kinds of work students are doing by the end of this course.
Scientific Revolutions: Blog
In the Fall of 2008, some students in Scientific Revolutions were asked to contribute to a class blog. This activity was intended to do two things. First, it exposed students to blogging and gave them experience with writing for a public audience. [Visit the blog] Second, it provided another venue for connecting class readings and discussions to the bigger picture (that is, the world at large). For outside readers, these posts provide a unique window into the classroom.
The Secular and The Sacred: Blog
During the Spring semester of their second year, students explore the evolution of culture and belief in a course entitled The Secular and The Sacred. As part of our ongoing class discussions and analyses, some students post weekly on the course blog. These postings are intended to extend class conversations in directions that the students find particularly interesting. Keep in mind that these posts are uncensored and sometimes contain controversial ideas. Students have the opportunity to reflect on their thinking, edit their posts, and challenge and respond to each other's ideas during the semester through blogging.
