Fieldwork in Burlington: EHS Division

Students majoring in Education and Human Studies at Champlain College are provided with vast opportunities through the connections and relationships established with the close-knit Burlington community.

Burlington is full of elementary, middle and high schools that provide Education majors with the chance to gain valuable teaching experience in front of a real classroom.  Champlain College provides students with as much working time in the field as possible, and the relationships Champlain maintains with Burlington schools-such as Burlington High School, Edmunds Elementary School, and Flynn Elementary-gives Champlain students the opportunity to build their classroom experience.

Psychology students have been associated with the Howard Center's Mental Health program as direct care providers, and have worked in the company's human resources and development departments.  Social Work students have served at many different sites, including the Lund Family Center and The Committee for Temporary Shelter (COTS).  Criminal Justice students have the option of spending their last semester at the Vermont Policy Academy, giving them an opportunity to graduate ready to join a Police Department as an officer.

Champlain College includes service learning as part of their curriculum for education majors, which challenges students to create a reciprocal learning experience to provide others with the tools to fight a societal problem.  This provides students with a chance to benefit both the community and themselves by working on "real" issues outside of the college classroom.

Although the Environmental major is new to Champlain College, there are already vast amounts of resources provided for these students throughout Burlington including The Intervale Center; Seventh Generation; City Market/Onion RiverCo-Op; the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Association; The Burlington Waterfront; Gross National Happiness USA and the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics.
