Accounting Major
Our Upside-Down Curriculum allows you to begin taking classes in your Accounting degree program starting the first semester of your first year.
Why Accounting?
Every company, organization and governmental agency relies on accounting expertise, and every businessperson must understand financial relationships to be successful. From small local businesses to large international corporations, all enterprises need accountants to express and interpret financial data. Accounting is quite literally the “language of business.”
Even in these difficult economic times, there is still a shortage of accountants. Job placements for Accounting program graduates have been astounding year after year. The placement rate in desired accounting positions for the class of 2010 was 100 percent. Many of these students secured their positions before graduation through our on-campus recruiting events, which include employers.
Why Accounting at Champlain?
The quality of any accounting program is driven by the experience and dedication of the faculty standing at the front of the classroom. The Accounting faculty at Champlain College is second to none; all Accounting faculty members at Champlain are accomplished in the field before they become professors.
In accounting programs at other institutions, you’re likely to sit in a huge lecture hall with dozens, if not hundreds, of other accounting students. As an Accounting major at Champlain, however, you will benefit tremendously from the small class sizes and personal attention you receive from your professors.
Regardless of whether you eventually want to work at a “Big Four” firm, run the finance department at an entrepreneurial venture or work in another area, Champlain’s Accounting faculty will take a personal interest in your goals and work with you to create the learning opportunities and internships you’ll need to build a highly marketable resume.
At Champlain, you’ll learn the skills necessary to prepare and analyze financial statements, prepare tax returns and apply the latest information systems in processing financial data. You’ll also develop the equally important communication, problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills essential to success in the field.
Our students and graduates do extraordinarily well on the CPA and CMA exams, and through Champlain’s post-baccalaureate certificate from the Division of Continuing Professional Studies, you can fill the gap between the 120 credits provided by a bachelor’s degree and the new 150-credit standard. The certificate is another example of the many ways the College and Accounting faculty prepare you to be career-ready to meet the challenges of the profession.
