Information Assurance Specialization

Focused area of study for Computer and Digital Forensics Majors

Why Choose a Specialization in Information Assurance?

Managing risks related to the use and transmission of information or data is the fundamental concept behind information assurance. The information stored on networks is often viewed as a very valuable asset to governments and corporations. In 2010, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received the second-highest number of complaints since its inception, receiving and processing on average 25,000 complaints per month. Companies need to be able to react and sometimes determine the source of the data breach or leak. That's where digital forensics comes in. Most companies can already "plug the holes" and "secure the networks" but they also need resources that can report to a scientific certainty who exfiltrated the information.

Students choosing to specialize in Information Assurance will examine the rationale and necessity for securing computer systems and data networks, as well as methodologies for implementing security, security policies, best current practices, testing security, and incident response. Students will also study the fundamentals of current Windows server systems and network administration. Upon completing this specialization students will be able to create and maintain secure computer systems, be able to identify risks, and recommend risk mitigation strategies.

Courses in the Specialization May Include:

SEC 250 - Computer and Network Security
SEC 345 - Information Assurance
NET 250 - Windows Server Systems

NET 215 - TCP/IP
Or
SEC 335 - Software & Web Site Security
Or
SEC 350 - Securing Enterprise Network
