Computer Science & Innovation Major
Our Upside-Down Curriculum allows you to start taking important classes in your Computer Science & Innovation degree program beginning in your first semester.
Why Computer Science & Innovation?
What makes an iPad do all the things it does? What's happening beneath the screen, and who in the world even came up with those things and figured out how to make them happen so effortlessly for the user?
Coming up with ingenious ideas for things that have never been done before and then figuring out the complex mathematics and technological mechanics required to make them happen is the ultimate challenge and passion of computer scientists.
Extraordinary computer scientists who can envision complex solutions to difficult technical challenges and create solutions will always be in high demand in our tech-driven society. Indeed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in both systems and computer science are expected to grow by an average of 40 percent by 2016.
Why Computer Science & Innovation at Champlain?
Computer Science is the most creative and diverse of all the technology fields; if a student can imagine a result, the learning in this major will allow that student to create it.
It begins with Champlain's unique practice-based approach to learning. Your professors will balance technical theory and classroom studies-encompassing everything from the most complex software systems to the lightest wireless applications-with an abundance of experiential work. You'll learn by doing as you undertake projects to create graphical user interfaces, develop advanced mobile programming, experiment with the untapped potential of robotics, and explore other futuristic technologies.
In addition to offering core computer science courses, this major connects the dots to the latest technological developments each year. We categorize those cutting-edge classes as the Innovation sequence of courses—an advanced feature of our curriculum that students would be highly unlikely to find in any other computer science program in the country today.
Champlain College's Computer Science & Innovation program will provide the preparation students need to be standout candidates for positions like software engineer, database administrator or designer, project manager, quality assurance engineer or systems analyst.
- Tailor your degree with a specialization or minor to create a highly marketable resume. Current specializations include Software Engineering for Emerging Technologies, Mobile Development and Applied Computer Science. Minors include Communication, Computer & Digital Forensics, Game Programming, Global Studies, Managing Information Systems, Marketing and Web Development.
- Take advantage of thoroughly immersive learning that will teach you to design, develop, test, manage and maintain a full range of software systems.
- Build programs that support emerging technologies like new Internet, mobile, wireless, embedded and robotics applications.
- Study open-source development and work in both Windows- and UNIX-based environments with development tools from industry leaders like Oracle, Microsoft, Borland, Rational and IBM.
- Learn management, communication and team skills that prepare you for industry needs.
- Network with employers through career fairs and company tours, and turn internships into full-time jobs at large and small software firms. Build relationships within the software industry through Champlain's technology partnerships.
