Cultural shifts in the marketplace have created the broadest professional spectrum of opportunities for artists than at any point in history, and there’s a high premium put on those artists who can truly bring something “new” to the table.
The degree of success for professional artists enjoy will continue to hinge upon having a skill set that is adaptable and flexible enough to meet the market’s relentless demand for innovation What does it mean to be creatively fearless? How can you push the boundaries of art and communication? How do you learn technique if you are not comfortable playing by the rules or working within constraints?
Why Creative Media at Champlain?
Creative Media majors explore their love for various artistic expressions as they create something new. If you like to see the results of answering questions such as “What would happen if I did… and then I did …?” you’ll find the ideal environment in which to cultivate your creative vision and to develop as an artist.
In this distinctive program, you will explore the iterative nature of creative work by evaluating, and deconstructing and revising your work in innovative Studio Workshops and Salon Seminars—course experiences that most students don’t have until the MFA level.
In Studio Workshops, you’ll build your portfolio, learn how to critique your work and that of your peers, and grow confident in your sense of self-expression. In Salon Seminars, you’ll study the theoretical underpinnings of art in the Western and global traditions, and engage in creative discussions about the arts.
You will have amazing opportunities to explore the possibilities of digital electronic forms using state-of-the-art technology. Embedded in the program is a very practical, career-minded focus that will help you turn your passion into a profession.
You’ll choose a primary focus area and two complementary areas from among five professionally focused artistic disciplines: Creative Writing, Game Media, Interaction Design, Moving Image (film and video), and Visual Art & Design.
This major is very conscious of branding, entrepreneurship and curatorial practices, grounding you in the business of interdisciplinary artistic endeavor.
You will graduate from this program as a confident, articulate person, able to express your process, your artistic voice and your personal brand.
ADMISSION PREREQUISITE: PORTFOLIO REVIEW.
- Experiment with the interplay of cutting-edge media, blurring the edges of different disciplines and pushing the boundaries of expression.
- Explore the interitive nature of creative work by evaluating, deconstructing and revising your work in innovative Studio Workshops and Salon Seminars.
- Integrate creative expression with the broad intellectual foundation of the Core Curriculum, as you learn to contextualize art within larger critical, historical and theoretical trends.
- Participate in an active artistic community both on campus and in Burlington, rated one of the “Top 25 Cities for Art” in 2010 by American Style.
- Become conversant in the arts and learn how to articulate the rationale for your artistic creations to others, including future colleagues, clients and employers.
- Meet the demand in the market for interdisciplinary talent, creative entrepreneurship and innovation—and increase your chances for commercial success.
- Graduate with a portfolio of work that demonstrates your technical proficiency, conceptual integrity and creative vision; you’ll be ready to interview with prospective employers or apply to an MFA program.
