Spanish Language Specialization

Focused area of study for Criminal Justice Majors

Why Choose to specialize in Spanish Language?

Spanish is the second most common language in the United States, with over 35 million people in this country who speak Spanish as a first language. Crime victims among the country's rapidly growing Spanish-speaking population are often misrepresented and victimized as a result of complex barriers of language and culture.

Criminal justice professionals with a fundamental understanding of Spanish communication skills have an immediate advantage over their peers, allowing for much greater job opportunity and career growth in the fields of law enforcement. This specialization offers criminal justice majors the opportunity to learn conversational Spanish, providing one of the most relevant and in-demand skills for future criminal justice and human service professionals.

The emphasis in this specialization is on oral communication, speaking and listening, as these will be the crucial skills for professionals working in Spanish-speaking communities. Students will be able to put to immediate use the areas covered in this class once they enter the working world. Extensive vocabulary and realistic everyday situations will be presented through:

  • Dialogues and role-playing interviews
  • Grammar and vocabulary reinforcement
  • Current events and contemporary issues, including religion and politics

Students will take one Spanish course in the second semester of their third year, another in the first semester of their fourth year (6 credits) and two more Spanish course in the second semester of their fourth year (6 credits). When students graduate, they will be prepared to pass an ACTFL examination for a certificate in speaking and understanding Spanish.
