Study Indie Filmmaking in Montreal Next Summer!

Live in Montreal for two months and study Urban Indie Filmmaking with celebrated Champlain College professor and Hollywood director Rob Schmidt Barracano. Home base will be Champlain's downtown Montreal campus located on Sherbrooke Street (near Rue Berri).

Montreal is a dynamic cultural and media center, home to the production of many Hollywood films and many cultural festivals and events (including the Montreal World Film Festival in August). There are few cities in the world offering this much access to film and creative culture.

During the first session, students will engage in intensive screenwriting and cinematography work that will culminate in the second session with a month of "urban indie filmmaking" that includes shooting, directing, editing and post production using state-of-the-art equipment. All participants will complete an original short film project.

Robert Schmidt Barracano Rob Schmidt Barracano, a professor at Champlain College, has taught in NYU's graduate film program in Singapore and at SUNY Purchase's program. He studied at the American Film Institute and is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America.

Who should consider participating?

Students at any U.S. institution of higher education who are interested in spending a summer in Montreal learning filmmaking. The program will be of particular interest to any English majors or students in arts programs other than film and to students in film theory programs that only offer limited production courses. The program will also appeal to students in completely non-related majors that would like to explore filmmaking.
Incoming Champlain College first-year and transfer students interested in learning more about filmmaking or those interested in majoring in Digital Filmmaking.
Current Champlain College students who are not Digital Filmmaking (DFM) majors but who would like an integrated filmmaking experience. Some of the summer credits could count toward a specialization in another major (such as a specialization in screenwriting for a student majoring in Professional Writing
Current Champlain College DFM students who would like to enhance their programmatic experience (6 of the 12 credits will count toward required DFM courses, and all 12 credits will count toward DFM program total credit requirements).

The Details

What: Urban Indie Filmmaking Summer Program

Where: Champlain College's beautiful campus located in downtown Montreal, Canada

When: Two parts:

Part 1 = May 28, 2012 - June 29, 2012
Part 2 = July 2, 2012 - August 3, 2012

Courses (12 total college credits):

Screenwriting (Session 1) - 3 credits
Cinematography (Session 1) - 3 credits
Urban Indie Filmmaking (Session 2) - 6 credits

Housing: Champlain College housing required; exceptions can be made upon request. Estimated cost: $1,450 (US)

Director/lead faculty member: Champlain College professor and Hollywood feature film director Rob Schmidt Barracano (Wrong Turn, Alphabet Killer)

Tuition: $7,680 (not including housing, meals, other living expenses)

Equipment Information:

All shooting equipment will be provided (including Canon 7D and Panasonic AF-100 cameras)
Participants are suggested to bring their own computer capable of cutting video.

Prerequisites: Those taking the course for college credit must submit a transcript from their home institution with their application. Include a short essay (250 words) about personal goals for engaging in such a summer filmmaking program. Must be age 18 or older to apply.
