Marketing Major
Our Upside-Down Curriculum allows you to begin taking courses in your Marketing degree program starting in the first semester of your first year.
Why Marketing?
Create. Engage. Connect. When you are a marketing professional, your job is to create messages that move people to take an action; spend time listening and engaging with your customers; and continually find ways in which to build connections both inside and outside your business. Marketing is both an art and a science. Marketing is where the magic happens. It’s the business discipline that connects ideas to the people that find value in them.
Why Marketing at Champlain?
People who become great marketers all have one important thing in common—they’ve had great mentors. Never before has mentorship been so important to a marketing education. In an industry that’s changing as quickly as marketing, the program you choose needs to be as up-to-date as possible, yet still grounded in the bedrock of traditional marketing principles.
At the same time, you need substantial experience in the field, learning, practicing and mastering the full spectrum of marketing tools and approaches. In the Champlain Marketing program, you will benefit tremendously on all fronts from the highly structured mentorship you receive from the Marketing faculty.
It would be difficult to find an institution with a higher commitment to getting students working in the field. From the start of your very first semester, your professors, all field-tested professionals themselves, will ensure that you are meeting with current marketing professionals, such as the marketing director of Burton Snowboards or Seventh Generation, or directors of not-for-profit organizations.
Throughout your first year, you’ll begin learning to apply marketing principles and tools through “living case studies” and project-based learning in the classroom, helping real businesses address real marketing challenges.
This type of intensive coursework in your first year gives you the foundation to build the resume you will need by your sophomore year for our Marketing internship program. Our Marketing faculty members have built an extensive list of exciting internship sites over many years. Each site has been visited, and each organization has a strong working relationship with the College.
Your Marketing faculty advisor will work with you on your resume and help you target the internship sites to best match your goals. The faculty mentorship you receive throughout your internship will give you the confidence and credentials to continue to do other marketing internships in your junior and senior year—as it has countless other Champlain Marketing majors and you may continue to do other marketing internships in your junior and senior year.
In core Marketing courses, you’ll learn how to create value for an organization through brand strategy and successful marketing management. You’ll explore the fluid nature of advertising and brand promotion in a mobile media environment, plan campaigns, and learn how to reach consumers and compel them to act.
Twelve flexible credits let you pursue a specialization in Digital & Interactive Marketing, Integrated Advertising, Event Management, Public Relations, or a self-designed option to create your own path.
You’ll graduate with a standout resume and a portfolio of hands-on projects that will help you land a marketing position in any industry you choose, from a high-profile corporation to a start-up marketing firm to a not-for profit organization.
