Pre-clinical Psychology Specialization
Focused area of study for Psychology Majors
Why Choose to specialize in Pre-clinical Psychology?
The pre-clinical specialization prepares students for careers involving direct contact with populations who may benefit from support, intervention or therapy. Some of these populations might include children with developmental disabilities, individuals with substance abuse issues, or families dealing with domestic violence, among others.
Students will complete coursework in abnormal psychology, personality, counseling and addiction and substance abuse studies. As with any specialization area, completion of an Internship in a relevant work setting provides valuable mentoring experiences with experts in the student's chosen field.
Immediately following graduation, students may secure employment as a human services worker in a variety of settings. Human services workers with bachelor's degrees can be employed as autism intervention specialists, vocational rehabilitation associates or substance abuse counselors, among others. This specialization provides solid preparation for graduate education, should a career in social work, clinical psychology or counseling psychology be desired.
