Weather Related Updates: Hurricane Irene

Please check back to this page for updates

Update - August 29

We are pleased to announce that Hurricane Irene was gentle on the hill section of Burlington and Champlain College. Unfortunately, as you may have seen on the national news, this is not the case for many others in the State of Vermont.

As of Monday, Aug. 29th  the weather forecast for Burlington calls for partly sunny skies and a high of 73 degrees today and for most of the week. Classes are in full session and the campus is 100% operational.

This is the final update related to Hurricane Irene.

Update - August 28 - 6pm

As of Sunday, Aug. 28th, 6:15 p.m. the Emergency Response Team has met and has decided the College will be open and classes will begin as scheduled on Monday, Aug. 29th.  If there are any significant changes during the night, a broadcast message will be sent from the MIR3Alert by 6:30 a.m.  Continue to monitor the web site.

Residential Students - the city of Burlington is experiencing intermittent power outages.  Continue to monitor the Web site.

Update - August 28 - 10am

As you are likely already aware, Hurricane Irene has been downgraded to a category one storm. The National Weather forecast projects a northeast wind ranging from 15 to 18 mph increasing to 29 and 32 mph along with 3-4 inches of rain today.

The morning Orientation programs are currently in session and we plan for the afternoon sessions to take place as scheduled.

Classes will begin on Monday as scheduled. Should there be any change for Monday we will post that information at 6:00 PM today.

Update from an email sent to ALL Champlain College students on August 25, 2011

Dear Student:

Like many of you, we are watching Hurricane Irene with some concern. The National Weather Service reports that Vermont may experience some severe weather on Sunday into Monday morning as Hurricane Irene moves north. For many of you this could impact your travel plans.

Although there may be no severe weather in Burlington, our Emergency Response Team met this morning and will be monitoring the reports from today through Monday. We are confident we can manage this kind of event, and that students will be safe and comfortable. Our entire community, including families of students, should visit our Web site, www.champlain.edu, or my.champlain.edu for regular updates.

If you are a Burlington campus residential student, we want you to know that should you perceive a weather emergency in your area affecting travel on Sunday, you may come to campus on Saturday.  Your room will be ready, and we will be ready to greet you.  Feel free to contact the Office of Residential Life if you have specific questions at reslife@champlain.edu or 802-860-2704.

We look forward to having you back with us to begin classes on Monday.
