Conflict Skills Training for Educators
Dates & Times: Aug. 10-12 --8:30 am - 4 pm, Aug. 13 -- 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
This training is designed for administrators, special educators, and leaders in school communities to help in the understanding of and managing of conflict. Today's educators are constantly challenged to deal with difficult situations and people both internally and externally. This workshop gives a variety of tools that will help in planning to deal creatively with conflict, building an effective conflict vocabulary, and helping to create a positive atmosphere to manage differences.
In the workshop, participants will address:
- Their own conflict attitudes and style
- A theoretical framework for understanding the nature of conflict
- Five key tools for communicating in conflict
- Planning for successful conflict engagement
- Evaluating when to engage, accommodate, or avoid a conflict
- Strategies for handling difficult situations
The workshop includes:
- Discussion
- Demonstration
- Presentation
- Practice exercises
- Case studies
- Small group work with participants' real life scenarios
Susanne Terry, M.S., is a faculty member in the Master's in Mediation Program of Woodbury Institute at Champlain College. She is a Special Education Mediator and Independent Reviewer with the Vermont Department of Education. She is also a contracted mediator with the Office of the Attorney General, the Human Rights Commission, and the Vermont Family Court Mediation Program. She has worked with educators, parents, and advocates for twenty-five years.
