All returning students who want housing must simply fill out an application on THD (The Housing Director) to request housing. The application is open during specific dates in the spring. The application is valid for the following academic year, with flexibility for approved study abroad. 

Housing selection is the process by which current Champlain College students sign up for spaces to live for the academic year. Students who are not currently attending Champlain College are not able to take part in housing selection or be pulled into a room.  Please see the Housing Selection Guide for further details. 

We believe that the unique residence halls and apartment-style living that Champlain offers hold something of value for all of our students. 

All students must fill out an application in order to participate in the housing selection process. This means you will receive a specific Time Block in order to choose your own hall and room. The Time Block will be for a specific date and window of time when you can log in to THD in order to choose your specific room out of those available at that time. The sooner you log in during your Time Block, the better the choice of rooms available. If you have applied for housing but cannot or do not choose a room during Housing Selection, the Office of Housing and Residential Life will add you to a waitlist to be placed during the summer months. You will be notified upon placement. 

All students who request housing and later cancel have a certain timeline to do so without fee. The Main Campus Cancellation Policy and the 194 St Paul Cancellation Policy are detailed further here.

Residence halls for students who require easy access to their cars are Boardman 396 Main Street, North House, Sanders Hall, and South House. Students must meet eligibility requirements and pay for a Zone 5 permit.  For more comprehensive information on parking, click here. 

Champlain College students with documented disabilities may request appropriate and reasonable housing accommodations within the context of current housing policies. The Housing Accommodations Request Form must be submitted each year by the Housing Application Deadline for review and renewal of appropriate accommodations related to Residential Life. Please send completed forms to The Office of Accessibility at accessibility@champlain.edu.  The Office of Accessibility at Champlain College evaluates requests for housing accommodations for students on behalf of the Department of Residential Life. Documentation must substantiate a diagnosed impairment that is a current substantial limitation to a major life activity as it relates to housing needs. A list of approved students will be sent to Residential Life and those students will be assigned based on their needs and notified of their assignment prior to the first night of housing selection.

Traditionally Champlain offers several options for students who would like to remain in their spaces during school breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks). For Upperclass students, 194 St. Paul Street, Juniper, Valcour and Boardman Hall will be staffed during breaks so that upperclass students may stay. Summit and 371 Main will remain open during breaks for first-year students.  All students wishing to remain in their spaces during any of these breaks should choose one of these break housing options. Before each break, any Main Campus resident wanting to stay past closing will need to apply to stay in their own room. Housing during breaks will be dependent on Vermont's COVID-19 restrictions.  No other halls on campus will remain open during these times.

Students who are abroad for the Spring semester and wishing to live on campus for the following academic year should follow the same steps as all students: You will need to apply for housing in the spring semester(click here for important housing selection dates). You will then be able to participate in the online selection process by logging in during your Time Block. Or, you may create a roommate group and designate a member of that group to sign up during the scheduled Time Block.   

Students who are abroad for the Fall semester and would like to live on campus for the Spring semester will receive communication from the Office of Housing and Residential Life about the application process around October.  

We recommend that all students apply for Main Campus housing in February.  Most students should know their study abroad status by late March, before Housing Selection happens.  If you are not approved for study abroad, you will be able to choose a placement for Main Campus for the fall. 

If you are confirmed for study abroad, we will cancel your housing application for Main Campus and you will not need to participate in Housing Selection.  The Office of International Education will manage your housing for your semester or year abroad. 

If you are returning for the spring semester, we strongly encourage you to live on campus for the spring semester. In mid-fall, students studying abroad will be emailed with details on how to apply for housing, both Main Campus and 194. All placements are made based on expected vacancies, and unfortunately, no specific placement can be guaranteed. Students coming back from study abroad will have first choice of spaces prior to assigning incoming spring students or transfers. Assignments will be finalized in January on THD.

If the number of students that paid by the housing deposit deadline exceeds the number of spaces in housing, Residential Life will manage a waitlist of students throughout the summer. All students that were on-time depositors or on-time waiver recipients will be placed in housing prior to move in for the Fall term and will be notified as spaces arise. Throughout the summer Residential Life will also work to reassign folks that filled out a reassignment form should spaces arise that fit the preference.

Students who are not happy with the space they chose at housing selection will have the opportunity to fill out a Reassignment Request form on The Housing Director (THD) under the applications tab. Please note that these requests will be filled over the summer as spaces become available. Please make sure to only request options you are willing to accept, as completing the Reassignment Request authorizes the Residential Life Office to move you based on the form you completed.

194 Saint Paul Street residence features studio, 2-person, 3-person, 4-person, and 4-person townhouse suites with full kitchens, living areas and bathrooms.  It does not require a meal plan. As a premier housing option, there is a separate application process to live in this facility, requiring students to sign a Housing Agreement which has a separate cancellation policy. Eligible students must be in good disciplinary standing with the institution and cannot be on residential or disciplinary probation at the time of their application. Seniors and juniors will be given priority for this building. For more eligibility and contract information visit the 194 St. Paul Street website. 

No student parking is permitted, either on-site or in the adjoining neighborhood, at any time. Consistent with College parking policy, students bringing a vehicle to campus must register the vehicle with the College. Dedicated parking is available at 175 and 115 Lakeside Avenue, the Residential Student Zone 2 lots. A Champlain shuttle will run to Main Campus as well as to Lakeside Avenue.

As you know, Champlain College is a dry campus which means that no alcohol or illegal drugs are permitted on school property. 

For those students who are committed to living a substance-free lifestyle, we offer a small intentional community of students who commit to substance-free living at all times. The students living here expect that no substances or effects of substances will be part of their community at any time.  The community serves as a safe space for those who choose to live in an environment free from alcohol and illegal drugs. 

All students signing up for these spaces will be required to sign a contract agreeing to live a substance-free lifestyle, and violations of this contract will result in a student being required to move from the building into another hall. This application will be live on THD in the "applications" tab beginning in February.  See Important Housing Selection Dates for key deadlines. 

Students are encouraged to visit Kate Ford, Assistant Director of Housing Operations, in Skiff Hall with any questions/concerns related to the Housing Selection process and gender-inclusive options.

Students wanting to live with someone of another gender may submit an application for 194 Saint Paul Street and indicate their preferred roommates on the application. All students sign up for single rooms within a suite setting.  Housing at 194 is gender-inclusive.  Champlain reserves the right to assign or reassign students to fill open rooms in suites at 194 St. Paul regardless of sex or gender identity.

For students that would prefer an option located on the hill section of campus, students may apply for the Gender-Inclusive Housing Program. Students can find the application on THD for gender-inclusive housing and will be accepted upon the successful completion of SafeZone Training. The training is a prerequisite for the program and will provide a baseline understanding of how to develop a shared community expectation that is beyond the gender binary. Students will attend one of the training sessions in January or February.  See Important Housing Selection Dates for details.

Application decisions will be communicated to applicants in advance of Housing Selection and will include a housing assignment. Accepted students will not be required to participate in housing selection. Students will be placed in a double room and must fill the room with a roommate of their choice and the roommate must also complete the SafeZone Training requirement. In the event of a vacancy within a gender-inclusive room, the student will be able to select another roommate. However, should that student not be able to locate another resident, Champlain College retains the necessity to maximize usage of housing options on campus and the room will become single-gender. Students that identify outside of the gender binary are asked to contact reslife@champlain.edu to explore options. Our team will work with you to identify the best housing situation. Students that do not wish to partake in the Gender-inclusive housing option on the hill section of campus or the 194 Saint Paul Street option may continue to seek support from the Office of Housing & Residential Life and the Accommodations Office to identify the best housing option for each person.

Application and admittance to live at 194 St. Paul Street takes place as part of the housing selection process. A separate application is required for this residence. Please visit the 194 St. Paul website for complete details, including floor plans.

This is the only on-campus housing option that does not require a meal plan.  This building will remain open during the break periods.

All campus housing at Champlain is substance-free, but each year, a residence hall is designated for those students who want a supportive environment with others who are committed to living in an atmosphere free from the presence and effects of alcohol and other drugs (including tobacco and marijuana).  More information can be found here. 

Each year, part of a residence hall is designated for students who wish to live in our Gender-Inclusive environment.  This housing option requires a separate application.  More information on the application process can be found here.

We encourage all students to grow important skills by working with your roommate(s) to sort out any issues. This is best done first by revisiting the Roommate Agreement that you signed early in the semester so that you can talk through any new issues. Next, we encourage you to speak with your RA who can provide some assistance and resources for working through difficult conversations. The Area Coordinator who is a professional staff member is also an excellent resource!

We find that even a difficult conversation that airs the issues can often make for a much more comfortable living situation. Please remember, our staff is here to help you work through your issues!
