Family & Friends Update:
Communicated to students at 3:45PM on Monday, October 29th

Dear Students:

Champlain College continues to monitor Hurricane Sandy. Our Emergency Response Team met at noon today and based on the recent predictions from the National Weather Service (NWS) decided the College will hold all classes including evening classes tonight. According to the NWS office in Burlington high winds are expected to begin around 8 p.m. The anticipated winds are expected to be between 25 and 35 MPH, with gusts up to 60 MPH.

Given this information, the campus will close at 8:30 p.m. As always, we hope individuals will use personal judgment in determining the appropriate time to leave campus.

The IDX Student Center and Library will close at 8:30 p.m. The last campus shuttle will leave the main campus at 9:30 p.m. for its last run.

At this time we plan for the College to be open on Tuesday for regular operating hours and classes. A determination for Burlington campus closure, if needed, will be made by 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30th. This notification will be sent via MIR3Alert system, email, College website, and the College main telephone number (860-2700).

Though we still do not anticipate major impact to the local area or on-campus, power outages remain possible. In order to be prepared we continue to encourage you to plan for potential interruptions in power and transportation, such as keeping your cell phone charged, putting gas in your vehicle and securing necessary prescription medication and personal items.

In the event of a power outage, all Champlain residents including those in apartment-style off-campus housing should follow this guidance:

  • Use caution within your residence and on the stairs as emergency lighting will be minimal.
  • Do not use candles or any other open flame as a light or heat source.
  • Your card access for all residential hall doors will still work. Your RAs will be on hand to assist with any unexpected door or lock issues.
  • If power fails in your residence for an extended period of time you can rely on the IDX Center, Freeman Hall and Joyce Hall as locations to charge electronic devices. The IDX Student Life Center will continue to serve meals and hot showers.
  • In the event of a prolonged power outage the IDX Student Life Center dining facilities will help students who need refrigeration for medication. To make such arrangements please bring your medication along with your student ID to the main office in the dining hall as soon as possible before 8:00 p.m. this evening.
  • To keep your friends and family up to date, we recommend that you forward this message and let them know that they can check the Champlain College website for the most up to date information.
  • In case of an emergency call 911 or Campus Public Safety at (802) 865-6465.

We will continue to monitor the storm and will update you as necessary through the following modes of communication: your RA's and professional live-in staff, www.champlain.edu, your mymail account and, if necessary, the MIR3 Emergency Alert text messaging system.

The safest place in the high winds that are predicted for tonight is within your residence hall or apartment.

Be safe and study hard!

Sincerely,

Leslie Averill
Vice President of Student Life
