Students across all departments at Champlain College were recognized for their hard work at the annual Student Employee Recognition Awards celebration held Monday afternoon in the Champlain Room.
The event, themed after the popular television show "The Office" celebrated the hard work that more than 725 student employees have put in this year. Along with the awards, students received special "You are Amazing" water bottles, enjoyed food and raffles. The Student Employee Awards are determined by a panel of judges who review the recommendations submitted by supervisors. There was a winner and a runner-up for each of the seven awards, and a total of 53 nominees. The event was emceed by Nichole Magoon, Champlain's Digital Community Manager. Awards were presented by President Donald J. Laackman.
For the second year, a Champlain College student also won the Vermont Student Employee of the Year. The 2017 winner is Matthew Fortier, a Junior Computer Science and Innovation major from Kennebunk Maine. He is currently the Lead Programmer at the Leahy Center for Digital Investigation, a second-year Resident Assistant, and Student Ambassador on campus.
Fortier spends the majority of his free time with his friends and family and obsessing over the Boston Red Sox. "His work experience at Champlain has defined his college career in more ways than one," according to his supervisor, Joe Williams of the LCDI. " His experience as a Resident Assistant, Student Ambassador, and Supervisor at the LCDI have not only fulfilled his need to spend time with friends and meet new people but have also helped him grow as an employee and a person. Becoming a Student Leader on campus is by far the best decision that Matthew has made in his college career."
