School Transfers

F-1 Student Transfer From Champlain College to Another University

If an F-1 student wishes to transfer from Champlain College to another school in the United States, a school transfer procedure must be completed in SEVIS.

Required Documents

When can a student transfer out?

A student can transfer out from Champlain College:

  • Before ever starting at Champlain College
  • During a term
  • After a term
  • After program completion
  • During post-completion OPT
  • After post-completion OPT

Procedures for Before Starting School Transfer

In order to be eligible to transfer out from Champlain College before starting school, a student must have reported to Champlain College prior to the program start date and can begin his or her studies at his or her new school no later than 30 days after his or her U.S. arrival.

The student must:

  • Have an acceptance letter and transfer form from the new institution (usually called a SEVIS transfer form and is available from the Designated School Official).
  • Complete a Champlain College F-1 Transfer Out Request Form
  • Make an appointment with the Assistant Director, International Student Services and bring the above required documents to your appointment.

The Assistant Director, International Student Services will assess your situation. If all the documents are in order, she will "transfer out" your SEVIS record.

Procedures for transferring during a term

In order to transfer during a term, a student must be maintaining status to transfer to another institution and there cannot be a gap between a student ending their studies at Champlain College and starting their studies at the new institution. For example, if you ended your studies on a Friday at Champlain, you would have to be able to start your studies at your new institution on Monday morning. If this is not possible, a student must finish his or her studies in the current term and then transfer before the beginning of the next.

Procedures for transferring after having completed a term, program, or post-completion OPT

In order to transfer after having completed a term, a program, or post-completion OPT, a student must be maintaining status and inform Champlain of his or her intent to transfer to another institution. Please note that the break between transfers cannot exceed 5 months. The student is usually required to transfer for the next "required" (fall or spring) term. If the next required term at the new institution starts earlier, the student must begin then. If not, the student must depart the U.S. and re-enter on a new F-1 status. If the next "required" term is more than five months away, the student must begin his or her studies in the next "available" (usually winter or summer) term. Again, if the student cannot do this, he or she must depart the U.S. and re-enter in new F-1 status.

Your SEVIS record will be transferred upon completion of the semester and cannot be released before the end of the semester. After your SEVIS record is released, your new school will have access to your SEVIS record and issue you a new I-20 form to complete the transfer procedure.

Please note with transfers occurring after the term, program, or post-completion OPT:

  • The student should obtain and sign a "Transfer Pending" I-20 within 15 days of beginning attendance at the new institution.
  • The student should report to his or her new DSO at the new institution within 15 days.
  • The student is required by immigration law to obtain a "Transfer Completed" Form I-20 within 30 days of the program start date at the new institution. This is required of all international students. If a student does not complete the transfer, the DSO at the new institution must terminate the student's SEVIS record.
