Katherine Quimby Johnson has taught in the Professional Writing Program at Champlain College since 2008. She currently teaches Technical Writing and Professional Copy Editing, but she has also taught Writing Young Adult Fiction, Writing for Children, Writing about Food and several portfolio courses.
Kathy is also a freelance writer, editor and copyeditor working in a variety of fields, with strong opinions about the serial comma, the subjunctive mood and the passive voice. She has edited numerous books for self-publishing authors, both fiction and non-fiction, but her personal writing focus is in the children's market, particularly picture books and YA. She is currently at work on a comic YA caper. Her work has appeared in Vermont Magazine, Vermont Life and Edible Green Mountains, as well as for corporate clients.
Kathy received a Fulbright Grant to Vienna, Austria, and her writing has been recognized with a Norma Fox Mazer Award from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a Susan P. Bloom Discovery Award from PEN New England. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, as well as a member of Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont, and volunteers one afternoon a week in her local elementary school's library.
Kathy holds a BA in English and German from Colby College, an MA in German from the University of Vermont and an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts.
