Champlain College Common App

Teaching middle school students is one of the most worthwhile and rewarding challenges you'll take on. The rapid intellectual and emotional development that happens between ages 10 and 15 makes being an educator of pre-adolescents particularly gratifying—and very often a ton of fun.

Being in a middle school community means you will get to watch students change, develop new ideas, find their passions, and learn more about themselves and their local and global communities. As a middle school teacher, you will be a critical part of this vital stage in a student's life; you'll be an influencer and a leader.

If you have a passion for education and want to foster positive development in young students, majoring in Education with a focus in Middle Grades may be the right path for you.

Why Major In Middle Grade Teacher Education at Champlain College?

Through Champlain's Upside-Down Curriculum, you will get started in your education classes from day one. You'll spend time in the field throughout every semester of study, giving you an impressive background and the confidence that comes with an abundance of firsthand experience. In just your first year, you will accumulate over 30 hours in the field.

As an Education major with a focus in Middle Grades, you will:

  • dive deeply into curriculum design
  • explore and understand learning theory
  • gain a solid foundation in adolescent psychology
  • learn specific strategies for integrating technology into the classroom
  • create your professional portfolio for licensure

Explore Various Teaching Environments

Going to school in Vermont allows you to explore and connect with diverse learning communities. Champlain will provide you with placements in various educational settings—including rural, small town, and urban—so you can build and vary your experience.

As part of the curriculum you'll develop, you'll have the option to work with English Language Learners (ELLs) in Vermont to gain valuable new perspectives that will strengthen your abilities as a teacher. You'll be challenged to think in new ways and develop your cultural awareness. You may also choose to tailor your education by adding one of Champlain's minors. For instance, you can explore concepts of equality, access, and human rights through our Social Justice minor

Dual Endorsement

Upon graduating from Champlain, you'll be qualified for a dual-licensure endorsement in two chosen subject areas. Choose from middle school English Language Arts, middle school Social Studies, and middle school Mathematics. You will have the flexibility to teach grades 5–9.

  • To be eligible for the Middle Grades English Language Arts endorsement, you'll focus on literature, writing, and drama courses.
  • For Middle Grades Social Studies, you'll focus on history, geography, economics, and government.
  • In Middle Grades Mathematics, you'll take a sequence of math classes including calculus, geometry, and discrete mathematics.

On top of being a flexible and knowledgeable teacher, you will have a uniquely marketable résumé that will allow for more job opportunities post graduation.

Educators with a Vermont license are eligible to apply for certifications out of state under the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC).
