Literature Concentration

The optional Literature concentration in the Early Childhood/Elementary Teacher Education program will give you depth of knowledge in a specific discipline of study.

The important skills you develop through the Literature concentration will make you more marketable in various school settings when you begin your job search.

• Become well-versed in significant historical works of literature.
• Learn how to provide students with cultural context about the world in which a book is set.
• Gain literary skills such as critical reading, forming interpretations, and creating arguments.
• Learn how to support students who wish to create works of literature.
• Use the lens of a discipline to strengthen interdisciplinary thinking through literature.

Your faculty advisor will help you map out the best academic path to reach your desired career and/or graduate studies goals.

Courses in This Concentration Currently Include:

• Either ENG 240: American Literature I OR ENG 241: American Literature II
• Either ENG 242: British Literature I OR ENG 243: British Literature II

• ENG 250: Reading and Writing Poetry
• ENG 215: Reading and Writing Fiction or ENG 270: Introduction to the Novel
• ENG 260: Survey of Drama

• ENG 340: The Canadian Literary Experience

• ENG 360: Adaptations: Narrative to Film
