Champlain College provides its multilingual learners with English language support so they can actively navigate classroom content. Through one-on-one, small group, and online tutorials, the ELL Tutor will support success in the core competencies of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The goal of the ELL Tutoring program is to reach out to all multilingual members of the Champlain College community, offering them individual and small-group tutorials based on a student-centered model. This model will empower students by strengthening their abilities in the foundations of English language fluency mentioned above. Every effort to accommodate the unique needs of each student will be made, and the Tutor will act as a facilitator for inclusivity by being a consistent contact for the ELL community.
Students may schedule appointments with an ELL Tutor and are asked to share the nature of their work and/or concern in advance, so the Tutor will know how to best prepare for the meeting. Advance preparation, as well as requiring students to be able to clearly define their assignments, questions and needs, will lead to greater productivity during sessions, and therefore, greater success in achieving fluency.
ELL Tutoring is not a writing center or an academic coaching center, but rather a place where students will be challenged to acquire greater fluency in the English language. Processing and eventually subsuming academic language — greater applied fluency — will be the one true focus of this tutoring initiative, and students will learn to appreciate the similarities and differences between their first (and possibly second and third) language and the English language. ELLs are encouraged to work with ELL Tutoring, the Writing Center, and Academic Coaching along with the Accounting and Math Lab to access the full array of support they may benefit from.
