The Opening Convocation ceremony for the incoming class will be held on Friday, August 25, 2017, at 3:00 pm under a tent behind Roger H. Perry Hall.
Opening Convocation is a long-standing tradition at Champlain College during which the school formally welcomes the first-year undergraduate class as they come together for the first time with each other and the entire community.
Convocation is derived from the Latin word convocare which means, "to call together." During the ceremony, President Donald J. Laackman, Provost Laurie Quinn, the faculty and faculty emeriti and President of the Student Government Association, dressed in their academic regalia, officially mark the beginning of the new academic year and welcome new students to Champlain College.
The keynote address of Convocation is delivered each year by the most recent recipient of the Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship, which recognizes outstanding dedication to students and the College. This year, Professor Cyndi Brandenburg, from the Core Division, will deliver the address.
During Convocation, the College also celebrates its close ties with the wider community of Burlington by conferring its Distinguished Citizen Award. This year's recipient is TBD.
