As a student in the Emergent Media program, you’ll live, work and create in the beautiful city of Burlington, Vermont. Here you will find a rare mix of outstanding natural beauty and a thriving, intellectually charged urban environment that boasts highly engaged and industrious art and tech communities.
Burlington consistently reveals itself to be one of the most forward-thinking cities in the country. Nationally identified for its quality of life, Burlington placed #11 in a list of the Top 20 High-Tech Metros by The Atlantic and makes the grade as one of Techie.com’s “Most Promising Tech Hubs to Watch.” Travelers Today ranked Burlington second in its “Top 5 College Towns in the Country” due to students’ access to the energized Burlington community.
Vermont is uniquely positioned between Boston and Montreal, two explosive regions in the tech and media world. Boston is known as an international capital of innovation, boasting leading tech and creative innovation companies such as Google, Amazon and IDEO. Montreal is home to Google, as well as over 70 game-related companies and development studios including Ubisoft, A2M, Behaviour Interactive, Electronic Arts and Eidos.
The Burlington area itself is a hub for the technology and electronic media industry - IBM, Dealer.com, MyWebGrocer, GE Healthcare, Polhemus, Ascension Technology, Solidarity of Unbridled Labour, Tag New Media, JNJMobile, and Vermont Film Commission— all of which provide a valuable resource for the Center and the community. There are a number of nonprofit organizations and independent game studios in the area, such as Girl Develop It, Vermont Makers, Generator, and Birnham Wood Games which are also key resources.
One of the missions of the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College is to spur these connections by fostering entrepreneurship and professional skills for Champlain students through industry exchanges, internships and networking opportunities.
As a Champlain College student, you will be minutes away from:
The epicenter of the city is a four-block, cobblestoned, outdoor marketplace cordoned off exclusively for pedestrians. The place hops. Street performers, cart vendors and outdoor eatery seating enliven the well-balanced distribution of national storefronts (like Macy's, Banana Republic and Urban Outfitters) among an eclectic roster of locally owned shops.
As well as being home to the approximately 24-acre Champlain College campus, Burlington boasts three other colleges and one major university research hospital; students represent a full one-fourth of Burlington's total population. Champlain and other local colleges offer a full calendar of open-to-the-public cultural events, concerts, lecture series and sporting events.
Burlington is such a distinctive city, it shows up in the top of many "best" lists year after year, including:
Burlington is widely considered one of the most livable cities in the country. As a college town, there are an abundance of rental opportunities and nearly everything is within walking distance.
