Program Details for the Art & Design Portfolio Summer Course

Working in the art studio during the college portfolio courseThis portfolio course is an immersive study experience designed for students entering their senior year of high school.  Here, you'll live and breathe art, graphic design, and digital technology for more than 2 weeks. You'll complete a rigorous college-level studio curriculum that is serious, challenging and fun at the same time. You will gain hands-on experience with a variety of art mediums and software programs, using class and studio facilities in the Center for Communication & Creative Media and the Metz Studio Barn. You will also experience what it will be like to study art and design on a college campus and have the opportunity to confirm that it's a good fit for you.

The enrollment will be kept small—no more than 22 students in a class, but usually less—to allow for individualized attention. All students receive personal coaching and work closely with Champlain College professors who have extensive expertise, teaching experience and professional connections in the field of art and design.  In all projects, students will be encouraged to think and work in ways that are highly original and involve taking creative risks.  By the end of the course, you will have the tools to create and present a professional-level design portfolio of your creative works and you will have earned 3 transferable college credits.

Skills you will have the opportunity to develop:

  • Express detailed observational skills through hand drawing
  • Reproduce your traditional media creations in digital media
  • Create compositions from photographic or scanned images, by creating and modifying pixel-based imagery (Photoshop)
  • Create and modifying vector-based imagery (Adobe Illustrator)
  • Create and manipulate multiple design elements for effective composition (InDesign)
  • Use industry-specific software to create new works of film, game art or creative media
  • Present your work to others in a clear and professional manner
  • Participate in group critiques to demonstrate effective listening skills and the ability to deliver honest and constructive criticism

The daily program will include morning and afternoon class sessions, studio work and professional site visits and then fun activities in the evenings. We'll work right through the weekend to take full advantage of the time we'll have together.

Fun Activities
After classes are done for the day, the Champlain summer experience includes fun activities like Game Night, Beach Trip, Movie Night and Talent Show.

About the Program Director:

Suzanne Snyder is the Program Director for the BFA in Visual Communication Design at Champlain College, as well as a professor in the MFA in Emergent Media program. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Towson University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The University of the Arts - Philadelphia. Since 1990, Suzanne has practiced varied disciplines within information and communications design, including information architecture, interaction design, usability research, identity and publications design, branding and environmental design. Through design firms, within large corporations and more recently as partner in her own company, Suzanne has provided comprehensive solutions to both regional and global companies including Steelcase, Iams, Australian Department of Education, Westinghouse, Johns Hopkins University, World Health Organization, PHH Corporation, Zurich Financial Services, Maryland Business Roundtable, Crittenton Services of Greater Washington and the American Institute of Architects. Suzanne's work has been recognized in professional journals including Print, Graphis, Graphic Design USA, and ID.

Concurrent with her design career, Suzanne has taught for universities, colleges, and corporations. Teaching has been a lifelong interest and more recently, a fully dedicated aspiration. Suzanne's area of focus is User Experience, Information and Interaction Design. She continues to be fascinated by the role of the user in the communication process and hopes to pass her passion for providing accessible and responsible design solutions on to her students.
