FAQs

What does the Women's and Gender Center do?

The Women's and Gender Center has two main functions: (1) we provide a welcoming and inclusive space on campus for students to spend time and (2) we provide education and support surrounding our three main themes: empowerment and leadership development, gender identity and sexual orientation, and sexual violence prevention. Our space offers a place for students to relax, have conversation, host meetings, and access support and resources. Our programming addresses the three themes of the center, offering education and support to the populations we aim to empower.

Why does Champlain College need a Women's and Gender Center?

Our center provides specific support for students whose gender identities and sexual orientations are traditionally marginalized in our culture - thus focusing on female-identified, transgender, gender-nonconforming, and LGBTQ+ identified students (including gay+ men). Female-identified, trans, and gender-nonconforming students are sometimes a minority in their fields of study, classes, and/or residence halls. The same can often be said for people who identify as LGBTQ+. The Women's and Gender Center provides a space for these populations to come together, be themselves, and talk freely with one another. We also offer specifically directed education that supports students' success at Champlain College and beyond.

What is the history of the Women's and Gender Center?

The Women's and Gender Center officially opened on the first day of classes on August 29th, 2016. The opening of this center came after years of dedication from countless students, faculty, and staff, and marked a new and exciting chapter for Champlain College. The WGC also contributes to the college's commitment to supporting and preserving diversity and inclusion.

Who is welcome at the Women's and Gender Center?

All are welcome! The Women's and Gender Center is a comfortable, inclusive, and fun place for students to hang out, meet new people, and have good conversation. Students of all gender identities and sexual orientations are welcome. We specifically provide support for students whose gender identities and sexual orientations are traditionally marginalized in our culture. Straight men are encouraged to be a part of the center as advocates, allies, activists, friends, supporters, etc.  The Women's and Gender Center welcomes discussions and opinions of all sorts, however we do not tolerate bigotry, racism, or hate of any kind. We strive to meet people where they are, encouraging healthy, inclusive, and friendly language and behavior.

What are gender pronouns?

Pronouns are tools used to refer to people.  The correct use of someone's gender pronouns acts as an important recognition of that person's identity. Basic gender pronouns might include she/her/hers, he/him/his, or they/them/theirs. People who identify as gender-nonbinary may use less prevalent pronouns such as ze/zir/zirs, and it is always their choice to determine what pronouns are most affirming and comfortable for them.

Introducing yourself with your pronouns is a helpful way of inviting others to share theirs. For example, "My name is Taylor and I use she/her/hers pronouns; what are your pronouns?" It is also acceptable to ask someone about their pronouns directly in a respectful and friendly manner. Questions like "What pronouns do you use?", "What are your affirming pronouns?", or "How would you like me to refer to you?" are acceptable and helpful ways to respect someone's identity.

A person's gender identity can change over time, so it's important to recognize that their gender pronouns may also change. Mistakes happen, but honest apologies and timely corrections demonstrate that you respect their identity.
