Women's Symposium Takes a Look at 'Being Brave'

The Women's Empowerment Symposium will be held on on Monday, April 3. The theme this year is "Being Brave: Cultivating our Courage & Confidence." The event is open to all and offers a diverse day of activities, celebrates diversity and features keynote speaker Alexia Vernon, who will focus on bravery and using challenges to an advantage. Vernon is founder and president of Influencer Academy. Branded a "Moxie Maven" by the White House Office of Public Engagement for her unique and effective approach to women's leadership, Vernon has spent her life engaged in growing female leaders.


A diverse all-student panel will discuss feminism: what it means and how it's evolving. Members are:

Hands-on workshops including:

  • Stand Up & Negotiate Your Worth (presented by Alexia Vernon)
  • Using Entertainment to Change Public Opinion (presented by Population Media Center)
  • Self-Defense for Women by Women (presented by The Safety Team)
  • Mansplaining by Dan & Luke: Men as Allies (presented by Luke Lewis & Dan O'Hara)

A highlight of the day will be the afternoon poetry slam featuring Muslim Girls Making Change and faculty, student and staff presenters.
