Math is everywhere—it tells stories, solves problems, powers entertainment platforms, and so much more. But what can you do with a degree in math? Whatever you dare—the possibilities are infinite in today's data-driven world.

Why Study Applied Math at Champlain?

There's no better place to study what you love and then try it out for yourself than Champlain College: we don’t just teach you advanced math, we want to see what you do with it.

The Applied Mathematics program is unique in that it provides the rigorous foundation of math theory and concepts that you'd expect in a B.S. in Mathematics program, but also the space and structure to find what gives you meaning with math. That fusion isn't standard in every math college curricula, but we deviate from the norm here to prepare our students to become outliers in the workplace. By the time you graduate from Champlain, you won’t just be solving math problems, you’ll be solving real problems through math.

Beyond your traditional classroom studies, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience through projects, client-based work, and internships. Plus, Champlain's Applied Mathematics curriculum is designed to encourage a semester of international study, allowing you to study abroad and still graduate on time.

Upside-Down Curriculum and Academic Experience

Through Champlain’s Upside-Down Curriculum, there’s no waiting to take the courses you’re most interested. Your first year will include applied math courses, while also giving you room to explore other areas of study that appeal to you.

The Applied Mathematics curriculum includes four main components:

Math Foundation
The math foundation is a sequence of seven courses, including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Probability/Statistics, and Programming, that develop the math theory and skills required to progress in your major and deepen your studies.

Math Electives
These courses allow you to focus on particular areas of math that interest or excite you most.

Applied Electives
Applied elective coursework is vast and varied, giving you access to courses across every discipline across the college. These will supplement your understanding of how math operates beyond an equation to build systems, find actionable solutions, and empower change.

General Electives
The curriculum provides enough general elective credits to allow you to choose any of Champlain’s minors, further customizing your education to your interests and career goals.
