Freeman Foundation Grant

As a Champlain College student, you can apply for a Freeman Family Foundation grant to take part in an 8-week internship in Asia. This life-changing opportunity gives you real-world experience in vibrant cities while helping you build global skills for your future career.

Opportunities in Dynamic Asian Cities

It began in 2013. The Robert P. Stiller School of Business sent 10 students to intern in Shanghai. Since then, more than 100 Champlain students have traveled to various countries in Asia for life-changing experiences that impact them academically, professionally, and personally. It was all made possible courtesy of the Freeman Foundation Grant.

    • 8-week (unpaid) internships (36-40 hours/week) through scholarship
    • Four destination cities in two countries
    • Housing and program costs covered by grant
    • Additional stipends for travel and living expenses based on location
    • 24/7 on-ground support through NextStep partner organization
    • Cultural immersion activities and networking events
    • Mentorship from Freeman Program Director

  • 2026 Location Options with Stipends:

    1. Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Thailand – $2,000 stipend
    2. Kansai Region (Kyoto/Osaka), Japan – $500 stipend
    3. Ho Chi Minh City – $2,000 stipend

Note: Stipend amounts are provisional based on 2025 program costs and may be adjusted.

  • Students apply to the program as a whole rather than to specific locations. Priority is a successful internship and global experience, rather than specific location.

    Final placements consider:

    • Location capacity and available industries
    • Skills/experience match with internship opportunities
    • Overall program fit and connection to intellectual interests and skills that go beyond major
    • Global and cultural interests that are specific and tied to deeper level interests and goals
    • Student preferences (communicated during application but we cannot guarantee placement)
