Core Principles
- Ethical Application: We prioritize fairness, transparency, accountability, and respect for intellectual property in the development and use of AI. We will explore and address the societal impact and potential biases of this technology.
- Learning & Innovation: We will explore AI as a tool for learning and innovation, encouraging experimentation and the development of new pedagogical approaches.
- Accessibility & Inclusivity: We will work to mitigate potential disparities in access and opportunity while supporting professional development through targeted resources that meet individuals at their current skill level.
- Collaboration & Community: We foster a collaborative environment where students, faculty, and staff can share knowledge, and best practices related to AI. We will engage in ongoing dialogue about the evolution of this technology.
- Future-Focused Preparation: We prepare students for the future workforce by equipping them with the skills, understanding and analysis necessary to navigate and leverage AI in their chosen fields. We will anticipate and adapt to the evolving demands of the AI-driven economy. We will remain committed to staying informed about AI innovations, regularly updating its policies and best practices in line with emerging technologies and ethical standards.

Best Practices for Using Generative AI at Champlain College
- Understand the Goals: Clearly define the purpose and objectives for using AI tools.
- Transparency: Disclose the use of AI-generated content and indicate the specific tools used.
- Accuracy and Quality: Review and validate AI-generated content for accuracy, reliability, and quality. AI output should not be assumed to be factual.
- Intellectual Property and Copyright: Respect copyright laws and intellectual property rights. Content generated by artificial intelligence tools should be clearly attributed. Understand the licensing terms of the AI tools you use.
- Bias and Fairness: Be mindful of potential biases in AI-generated content. Critically evaluate outputs for potential bias.
- Data Privacy and Security: Review the AI provider’s terms of service regarding data retention and model training. Never input Level 2 (private) or Level 3 (restricted) data (as outlined in our Data Classification Policy) into any generative AI systems.
- Accountability: Maintain human oversight of AI-generated content.
- Ethical Use: Use AI responsibly and ethically, in alignment with the College’s values and mission.
- Academic Integrity/Honesty: When using generative AI in academic work, students must adhere to Champlain College’s Academic Integrity/Honesty Policy and instructor policies and guidelines, including fair use and proper citation. Using AI tools when prohibited, or failing to properly attribute their use, constitutes academic dishonesty.

What are Generative and Agentic AI?
Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence technologies that can create new content, including text, images, music, code, and more. Generative AI includes tools like Claude (text generation) and DALL·E (image generation).
Agentic AI are systems that perform a series of tasks to achieve goals without constant human direction. For example, a virtual assistant may coordinate multiple services to plan a trip.
