For people that walk for transportation, it's surprisingly easy to get to many favorite Burlington spots from campus (don't be scared of the hills!). It's a quick walk to Downtown, the waterfront, UVM campus, and Lakeside—just to name a few!
A number of local partners and resources are also here to help get people out walking as much as possible:
For the perfect walking tour through campus, start at Main Street beside 'The Gallery' and head south through Finney Quad to Perry Hall at the end. Turn up the hill, crossing over South Willard St and walking to the right of Cushing Hall (right in front of the crosswalk) where you will find a set of stairs leading to Rozendaal Courtyard. Further sets of stairs takes you to the green and the 'top' of Campus at Summit St. The route can be seen as a layer on our google transportation map. Feel free to walk up to the third floor of the Library, Miller Information Commons for some rewarding views. You earned it.
If you're not familiar with a Vermont winter, you will be soon! It's important to keep a few things in mind when you go out walking—either for pleasure or for transportation—in the winter. We've outlined some top tips:
Be visible. Wear bright clothing and reflective lights or material.
Be predictable. Walk on sidewalks or pedestrian paths, cross at crosswalks, and obey signals.
Be defensive. Always look for oncoming traffic. Make sure motorists and bicyclists see you.
Be aware. Keep the volume on any portable devices low enough to hear traffic.
Be prepared. Wear proper clothing for the elements. If you're walking a long distance, plan routes where you can go inside to warm up along the way if needed.
Be equipped. Improve your traction on snow and ice with proper boots and/or traction devices.
We hold an annual Winter Walking Workshop in association with CATMA with special guests of the professionals at Outdoor Gear Exchange. This workshop highlights tips, techniques and equipment for simple, safe winter walking. Look out for future events by CATMA around walking as transportation.
