Artist in Residence Gowri Savoor Holds Rangoli Workshop

Gowri Savoor's Rangoli Workshop

Vermont based painter and sculptor Gowri Savoor weaves geometric vortexes of color inspired by her practice of the ephemeral Indian art of Rangoli-mandala-patterns made from colored rice. In the spring of 2016, Savoor worked as an artist-in-residence at Champlain College's MakerLab focusing on the transformation of her Rangoli inspired paintings into color 3D printed objects. This exhibition features her paintings, and the sculptures resulting from her residency. Born in Manchester, England, Savoor was educated in Manchester and Leeds.

Champlain College students in Prof. Katheryn Wright's Global Studies Senior Seminar spent the afternoon Thursday with artist Gowri Savoor learning about the ancient ephemeral art form practiced through India - Rangoli. Working on a design created by Savoor, the students used colored rice to bring the design to life on the floor of the CCM Gallery. The Rangoli and Gowri Savoor's other works are on display through Nov. 5.
