Biography

Originally from Venezuela, Martha is the newest member of the Champlain Abroad office. Her main responsibility is working with students who want to study abroad in Champlain College’s Dublin and Montreal programs. She is in charge of advertising the programs as well as recruiting, advising and helping students through the application process. She is also responsible for the curricular side of study abroad, so she often collaborates with faculty to make sure that students from all majors are able to study abroad. She comes from a background of linguistics and literature, and taught French as a foreign language for twenty years before transitioning to this position.

Martha earned her PhD in Romance Studies at UNC Chapel Hill in 2021. At Champlain College, she often teaches a section of the course Interdisciplinary Perspectives that focuses on Graphic Medicine for the Core Division. Her research interests include non-fiction literature by francophone women, comics studies and gender studies. In her free time she enjoys reading, crafting, watching movies and playing videogames.

Biography

Elin loves working with students to help them achieve their study abroad aspirations. She especially enjoys matching students with the programs that work for their curriculum and meet their personal goals. She also likes helping them understand the financial part of study abroad. She spent over 13 years abroad herself.

Elin’s first experience abroad was at 17 when she went to live with friends of friends in Thônes, France and spent her mornings working at a cheese counter in a little grocery store. After three months there, she moved to Bielefeld, Germany where she worked as an au pair for another three months. Elin then got her BA in English from Georgetown University (with a year abroad at the University of Warwick in England). She joined the Peace Corps after college teaching English and working on a new middle school English textbook series in Niger, West Africa. She came back and got her MA in Applied Linguistics at Ohio University where she also taught ESL. That led to ten years in Japan where she started teaching English at Nagasaki Wesleyan Junior College in Isahaya, Japan and then teaching at the Komaki English Teaching Center, a school for 300 adult students, run by Ohio University and the City of Komaki where she eventually became the director. At the end of her time in Japan, she adopted two children and decided to move back to Vermont. Back in Vermont, she worked at Gardener’s Supply, St. Michael’s College, Common Ground Center and started her own bookkeeping business. All of those jobs led her to believe that teaching and education is the key to everything and make her feel grateful to be once again working with students in higher education.
