Champlain College is making a new commitment to incoming first-year and transfer students entering in Fall 2027: your first-year Champlain tuition and fees, after grants and scholarships, will be capped at a clear, published benchmark. For Vermont residents, we match the University of Vermont’s 2027-2028 in-state tuition and fees. For out-of-state first-year and transfer students, we cap our tuition and fees at $30,000. Whichever applies to you, the commitment works the same way.

The Champlain Flagship Award

If you begin at Champlain as a new first-year or transfer student in Fall 2027, your Champlain tuition and fees — after grants and scholarships — will be no more than UVM’s published 2027–2028 Vermont resident undergraduate tuition and Comprehensive Fee.

The Champlain Flagship Award

How it works

We first apply your grants and scholarships to your Champlain tuition. If your remaining Champlain tuition is higher than UVM’s 2027–2028 tuition and Comprehensive Fee, Champlain will provide a Champlain Flagship Award to close the difference. If your other grants and scholarships already bring your Champlain tuition to that level, you will not receive an additional Flagship Award. This award applies to Champlain tuition and fees only; housing, food, books, supplies, insurance, transportation, and other costs are not included.

Who qualifies

Vermont residents admitted as a new first-year or qualifying transfer student for Fall 2027, enrolling full-time.

Completion of the FAFSA is required.

Important notes

  • Your Champlain Flagship Award amount is calculated once, based on your first year, and remains a fixed dollar amount for all four years. It renews automatically each year at that same amount, as long as you’re enrolled full-time and maintain a 2.5 GPA.
  • This commitment establishes your first-year net cost relative to UVM’s published rate. Because the award is a fixed dollar amount and both institutions’ tuition and fees may change independently after your first year, we cannot guarantee your net cost will stay at or below UVM’s rate in years two through four.
  • Your merit aid, including this award, is protected under Champlain’s Count On It Guarantee: your merit award will not decrease for as long as you remain enrolled full-time and meet renewal requirements.
  • This commitment is for up to four consecutive academic years, or until graduation, whichever occurs first.

The Champlain Access Award

How it works

We first apply your grants and scholarships to your Champlain tuition. If your remaining Champlain tuition is higher than $30,000, Champlain will provide a Champlain Access Award to close the difference. If your other grants and scholarships already bring your Champlain tuition to $30,000 or below, you will not receive an additional award. This award applies to Champlain tuition and fees only; housing, food, books, supplies, insurance, transportation, and other costs are not included.

Out-of-state residents admitted as a new first-year or qualifying transfer student for Fall 2027, enrolling full-time.

Completion of the FAFSA is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • There is not a separate application for the Flagship Award or the Access Award, but completion of the FAFSA is required. Eligible students are automatically considered for the tuition commitment as part of the admission and financial aid process. Students must report any outside grants or scholarships they receive.

  • The Champlain Flagship Award is available to Vermont residents enrolling as first-year or transfer students in Fall 2027.

    Champlain first applies all grants and scholarships you receive, including federal, state, institutional, and outside awards. If your remaining balance is higher than Vermont’s flagship public university’s published in-state tuition and fee rate for the 2027-2028 academic year, Champlain will provide a Champlain Flagship Award to cover the difference. If your grants and scholarships already bring your Champlain cost to that level or below, you will not receive an additional Flagship Award.

    This award applies only to tuition and the Comprehensive Fee. It DOES NOT cover housing, food, books, supplies, health insurance, or other educational expenses.

  • The Champlain Access Award is available to out-of-state students enrolling as first-year or transfer students in Fall 2027.

    Champlain first applies all grants and scholarships you receive, including federal, state, institutional, and outside awards. If your remaining tuition and Comprehensive Fee exceed $30,000, Champlain will provide a Champlain Access Award to close the gap. If your grants and scholarships already reduce your Champlain cost to $30,000 or less, you will not receive an additional Access Award

    This award applies only to tuition and the Comprehensive Fee. It DOES NOT cover housing, food, books, supplies, insurance, transportation, and other costs.

  • No. The Champlain Flagship and Champlain Access Awards are available only to U.S. residents.

  • No. These awards are available only to students who enroll at Champlain as first-year or transfer students beginning in Fall 2027.

  • Yes. Your award amount is determined during your first year at Champlain. Once awarded, the amount is guaranteed for up to four consecutive academic years, or until you graduate, whichever comes first, provided that you remain enrolled full-time and maintain academic requirements.

    While tuition rates at the College or Vermont’s flagship public university may change in future years, your Champlain-funded award will remain the same. It will not be recalculated each year based on future tuition increases.

  • The Flagship and Access Awards are part of Champlain’s Count-On-It Financial Aid Guarantee, which means your award is guaranteed for up to four years of study or until graduation, whichever comes first. Once your Champlain Flagship or Champlain Access Award is established, the amount of that award is guaranteed for up to four years, provided you remain enrolled full-time in on-campus undergraduate programs and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.

    While tuition rates may change in future years, your award amount will stay the same. You can count on receiving the same Champlain-funded award each year that you remain eligible.

  • The Flagship and Access Awards cover tuition and the Comprehensive Fee, which contributes to student support services, programs, and resources available across campus.

  • Yes. By completing the FAFSA, students may qualify for federal, state, or institutional financial aid that can help cover expenses such as housing, food, books, supplies, and transportation. Additionally, students can apply for private scholarships and loans, each of which will have its own deadline and requirements. Students are encouraged to work with the Office of Financial Aid to explore all available federal aid options.

  • The Champlain Flagship Award and Champlain Access Award are administered the same way as our existing merit and need-based awards. These awards do not apply while a student is participating in study abroad programs.

    However, students who study abroad or leave on-campus study for an internship and later return to Champlain’s full-time on-campus undergraduate program will continue to receive the Champlain-funded award established during their first year under the Count-On-It Financial Aid Guarantee.

    Students planning to study abroad or participate in an off-campus experience are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid to understand how their specific program may impact their financial aid package.

  • The Flagship and Access Awards will be offered to students who remain enrolled full-time in an on-campus undergraduate program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for up to four years of study or until graduation, whichever comes first.

  • Federal, state, institutional, and outside grants and scholarships are applied first. Once those sources of aid have been applied, Champlain determines whether your remaining tuition and fees exceed the applicable tuition commitment benchmark. If they do, the College provides either the Champlain Flagship Award or Champlain Access Award to cover the difference.
