Why Minor in Project Management?

The Project Management minor at Champlain College prepares you to be that person. You’ll learn how to lead cross-functional teams; manage tasks, deadlines, and schedules; communicate clearly across departments; and master project management frameworks like Scrum, Agile, Kanban, and Waterfall — all while keeping efficiency and team wellbeing at the center of how you work. This course explores the science of success and human-centered leadership, helping students be more human in a digital world. By exploring emotional intelligence, strengths-based approaches, and Appreciative Leadership, students will gain skills to thrive personally and professionally. Through hands-on activities, reflection, and collaboration, students will learn to navigate change, foster innovation, and lead authentically, creating a roadmap for long-term personal and professional growth.

Students use basic data analysis to find meaning in data through data cleaning, analysis and visualization. Students will learn Excel and other contemporary tools, spreadsheet manipulation, data cleaning and other data analytic techniques. Students will produce the kind of visual, written and verbal information that helps communicate results of data analysis to evaluate and optimize decision making.

Students will learn about team interactions, software project management processes, tools, and technologies, through observation, reflection, role-play and hands-on software project management. Students are introduced to project management as a discipline, compare various software project management methodologies, discover and reflect on individual strengths and practices, and apply the Agile methodology to game development using Scrum, including day-to-day techniques to lead a team to success without waste, technical debt or crunchtime.

Students will work in teams to define project scope, specifications, and assumptions while developing essential skills for coordinating people, processes, and resources. Students will explore project management methodologies including Waterfall, Scrum, Kanban, Lean, and hybrid approaches. Students will engage with stakeholders, develop work breakdown structures and Gantt charts, and use project management software to manage scheduling and facilitate team communication. Students will plan and execute projects for campus or community clients and deliver documentation and results that meet stakeholder expectations.

In this course, students will build the skills and confidence to lead teams where people do their best work. Students will learn to motivate and develop others, turn conflict into forward momentum, deliver feedback that works, and have the direct conversations that great leadership demands. Through real-world simulations, case studies, and reflective practice, students will grow a personal leadership toolkit ready for the real challenges teams face, so they can lead teams where everyone can contribute, grow, and succeed.
