Animation Portfolio

Submitting a portfolio to Slideroom is a recommended but not required step in the admissions process for the animation major.

The Animation major is a visual arts program focused on creating 2D and 3D art and animation for film, television, visual effects, and virtual production. To thrive in this program, students should enter with strong aesthetic skills and a genuine passion for visual art across both traditional and digital media.

SUBMIT Your Portfolio

We strongly encourage you to submit the recommended portfolio: three (3) observational drawings from life (as one PDF), plus up to four (4) additional files that demonstrate the breadth of your skills as a visual artist. This is your chance to make a strong first impression.

  • One PDF file that contains each of the following observational drawings, created using traditional media (e.g., pencil, pen, charcoal, paint). Please organize this so that there is one drawing per page.

    1. One still life
    2. One perspective drawing
    3. One portrait

  • These files can contain any combination of traditional or digital art. If you have more than four additional pieces that demonstrate the breadth of your artistic and technical skills, you can combine work into multi-page PDF files for still images or MP4 files for animation. Avoid including work like logos or photography.

    • Please do not include work that copies photographs by using paintovers or the grid method, although photos may be used for reference.
    • Do not include AI-generated artwork.
    • Do not directly replicate another artist’s work (including replicating anime drawings, cartoons, or video game character designs).
    • Do not include anime-style drawings in your portfolio. They don’t tell us enough about your aesthetic ability.
  • Upload your files to Slideroom and finish the application by answering the questions about yourself in the online form.

    SUBMIT

  • Your portfolio will be evaluated for skill, visual aesthetics, artistic practice, and creativity. Applicants should focus on demonstrating the depth of their artistic talent — quality is preferred over quantity. Please take time when answering the questions on the form in Slideroom. Good communication is an important quality for animators.
