Build a Better World

Progress doesn’t just happen; we must imagine a better world and go out and build it. One of the greatest gifts Champlain College gives our students is to help develop an entrepreneurial mindset, and Vermont is the ideal place to do that.

Leading the Way

Champlain College has one of the best cybersecurity and digital forensics programs in the country. This effort provides a blueprint for supporting more female-identifying students and other underrepresented groups in STEAM fields.

Not by Luck or Privilege

A college education creates opportunity for Champlain students and each generation that follows. We graduate students who are ready for work, for life, to make a difference—not by luck or privilege, but by design.

Students come to Champlain College to build a better future. Our students graduate Ready. Ready for work. Ready for life. Ready to make a difference.

More Human in a Digital World

As technology becomes more and more important, it’s the “human skills” that will define our students. These human skills include our ability to empathize, listen, influence, form relationships, make connections across disciplines, work across lines of difference, live our values, and inspire others.

Communication Leadership

We strive to create a community that embraces differences, recognizing that through thoughtful engagement, we learn from one another. As an institution of higher education, our role is to teach students how to investigate issues, have civil conversations, to listen, and if needed, to respectfully disagree.

Skeptical in All the Right Ways

The world is a complex place, which is why our Core Curriculum connects a variety of subjects to encourage reasoning, critical thinking and curiosity. Through project-based research, our students actively practice how to explore various aspects of any issue, learning how to recognize influences beyond the obvious.

In my early days as a junior professor, I loved to shake things up in classroom teaching, and I’m drawn to that same commitment to disruption at Champlain.

College Competencies

Self-Guided Learning

We established a list of College Competencies as the foundation of the educational experience at Champlain College, regardless of the student’s major. The goal is to help our students develop into ethical, self-guided learners.

Life-Long Learning

Life is a process of continuous development—learning in its broadest sense never ends. Developing these skill areas helps Champlain graduates continue to grow and develop after college by giving them the tools to take charge of their own learning.

Practice Makes perfect

These skills are best developed through consistent practice, application, and instruction, which is why courses are designed with these competencies in mind, incorporating instructional and developmental activities in these areas wherever possible.

I like to think of our College Competencies as the promise that Champlain makes to incoming students. When you come here, we’re going to help you develop skills like communication, collaboration, inquiry, creativity, information literacy, quantitative literacy, diversity, equity inclusion, global and culture understandings—regardless of what you’re majoring in.
