Accounting Major

Ready to get started?   Apply now to this program!

As the link that connects all businesses, accounting professionals are in high demand in a broad range of industries. An Accounting degree from Champlain positions you for versatility and career growth.

Why Study Accounting at Champlain College

The outstanding faculty in Champlain's Bachelor of Science in Accounting program have built industry-relevant courses that offer you the content and skills to succeed in today's dynamic accounting environment.

In addition to developing your expertise in accounting, the Robert P. Stiller School of Business provides a well-rounded interdisciplinary business education—with an emphasis on social impact—that prepares you exceptionally well for the marketplace.

Experiential Learning

A Champlain education is focused on practical experience and developing the skills you'll need to thrive after graduation. You'll have numerous opportunities to gain valuable hands-on experience:

  • Participate in internships with companies like AON and KPMG. You can also take international internships during a semester abroad on our Dublin campus or in Shanghai through a summer grant program.
  • Hold paid peer tutoring positions in Champlain's Accounting & Finance Lab.
  • Serve the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), in which you will complete and successfully certify in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers.
  • Compete in our annual Elevator Pitch event, in which students can win up to $500 for successfully pitching a business or nonprofit of your choice to fictitious executives. (Accounting students have taken first place four times in the last nine years—and almost every year, they place in the top three and/or earn the People's Choice award!)
  • Integrate your academic work with your career ambitions in your senior capstone project.

In our Accounting program, your classes will never be in a giant lecture hall; Champlain's smaller class sizes make for deeper discussions and more engaging projects. You'll have ample opportunity for one-on-one interactions and mentorship from your professors, who bring their real-world knowledge into the classroom. Your faculty will get to know you, acting as both your teacher and guide, in your years of self-discovery at Champlain College—helping you to hone your interests and career path.

Take an Internship in Asia

Since 2013, The Robert P. Stiller School of Business has received a prestigious grant from the Freeman Foundation that allows students to travel to countries in Asia to participate in summer internships. Primary destinations include Kyoto, Japan, and Shanghai, China.

Our students have a unique chance to gain international work experience—while learning about another culture and practicing another language—with little out-of-pocket expense.

Pathway to CPA

Plan to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam? We can help you reach the 150 credit hours needed for licensure through our established Accounting and Finance double major or by working with you individually to match your interests with the many other minors and majors offered at Champlain College.

Our program also gives you the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue your Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certification and to sit for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam.

The 2020 Fiske Guide to Colleges selected Champlain as one of the "best and most interesting schools" in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.

Champlain was named a "Most Innovative School" by U.S. News & World Report for the fifth consecutive year in its "America's Best Colleges" 2020 rankings.

Of 2019 graduates from the Accounting major are either employed or continuing their education within six months after graduating.

Champlain’s Upside-Down Curriculum got me started in business classes right away, and I quickly realized I love my major! It gave me the peace of mind I needed because I didn’t have to wait until junior year to figure out if I was on the right path.
