Champlain College is undergoing a major campus revitalization this summer with the renovation of the Freeman and Joyce academic buildings. The project, fully funded by federal appropriation, will create a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Center at the heart of campus.
The multimillion-dollar renovation will transform first-floor classrooms in adjacent Freeman and Joyce halls into technology-enhanced learning spaces with modernized science labs. A new connecting addition will be constructed between the two buildings, providing additional social and study areas for students.
“The Freeman/Joyce renovation is a targeted investment in our facilities to support STEAM programming, new enrollment, and community-building,” said Alex Hernandez, President of Champlain College.

Construction fencing has already been installed around Freeman, and major construction began at the close of the Spring 2024 semester, and is currently underway. Champlain has hired Engelberth Construction Inc, an experienced construction management firm to oversee the project, with architectural support from Goody Clancy, which is expected to be completed before the start of the Fall 2024 semester.
Current students and visitors can expect some temporary disruptions around the construction zone during the summer months. However, college officials have assured that efforts will be made to minimize the impact on campus life.
The revitalization of the STEAM Center is part of Champlain’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional learning facilities that prepare students for success after graduation. With new technology-rich classrooms and collaborative spaces, the College aims to foster greater innovation and interdisciplinary education.
