Champlain Students and Faculty Shine at Regional Student Emmy Awards
Students and faculty represented Champlain College at the recent National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter Student Production Awards, also known as the Emmys. The annual awards recognize outstanding student achievement in television production in categories including news, fiction, documentary, animation, and more.
Among those nominated were Broadcast Media Production senior Audrey Lewis ’24 and Filmmaking senior Fiona Murphy ’24, who took home top honors in the Non-Fiction Long Form category for their documentary The Liberties Weavers. The film chronicles a weaving group in the Liberties neighborhood of Dublin, Ireland, where one of Champlain’s international campuses is located. Lewis and Murphy produced the award-winning piece during their junior year as part of the FLM 260: Documentary Filmmaking class, taught by Professor Barrie Dowdall.
Champlain also had several other winners and honorable mentions. In the News Report-Light News category, senior Broadcast Media Production major Jordan Butterfield ’24 took home the award for his story “Water Treatment Package.”
Filmmaking senior Samantha Simpson ’24 took home two awards—an honorable mention in the Fiction-Short Form category for her film Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels and a win in the Animation/Graphics/Special Effects category for the same project.
Other honorable mentions went to Megan Buckley (Editor), Colby Caldwell (Fiction-Long Form for Within These Walls), and Ross Cooper (Fiction-Long Form for Bouncer). Filmmaking senior Ethan Hacker ’24’s cinematography reel earned him the Photographer award.
The NATAS Boston/New England Student Production Awards are a prestigious recognition of the talented students and faculty at Champlain College, and winners will be honored at a ceremony in Boston in June.
