Do you have a head for business and a heart for video games? The game industry needs individuals with an aptitude for communication and business who can manage a game development team to create innovative and exciting new games.
In Champlain's Game Production Management major, one of the few degrees of its kind in the country, students learn to organize, motivate, and oversee creative teams. You'll be an integral part of the process, learning how to effectively bring together contributions from each team member to create a finished game.
Our Upside-Down Curriculum gets you into Game Production courses in your first semester. Through real work experience, you'll build an impressive portfolio of collaborative work and create a remarkable résumé; you'll be prepared to be a leader in the gaming industry. Our integrated business curriculum means you'll learn to evaluate the latest trends in the game industry from new technologies to new genres and platforms, build essential skills for budgeting and product development, and emerge ready to take your next step-whether that's at an international AAA studio or an indie startup.
Over your four years at Champlain, you play an important role in Champlain's unique Game Studio, which parallels the setting of a professional game production workplace. You'll work with students in the Game Art, Game Design, and Game Programming majors to build games from start to finish.
In your senior year, you will have the opportunity to present the game you've created with your Game Studio team to recruiters from all over the world. Representatives from companies such as Activision/Vicarious Visions, Behaviour, Hidden Monster Games, Otherside Entertainment, Sony Bend, Trivium Interactive, Ubisoft, and Velan often attend the Senior Show to hire their new talent.
This collaborative environment is key to the success of our game students. You can graduate from Champlain and start working in one of the biggest game companies in the world without missing a beat-you've done this before.
The CCGDA is an official Champlain chapter of the International Game Developers Association—the largest professional organization of game developers and educators. The CCGDA sponsors speakers and other professional events at Champlain, runs the Global Game Jam, and organizes field trips to conferences.
Each year Champlain College faculty and students attend a variety of conferences so that our students can network with professionals in their field and make an impression on future employers. We send many game students to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco each year, where we host a reception for recruiters and alumni. Champlain is always well represented by our students at the Montreal International Game Summit, and we also send students to events like PAX East, SIGGRAPH, The Educational Game Summit, and the Games for Change Conference.
Project management: As a producer, you are responsible for designing schedules, keeping your team on track, and ensuring deadlines are met. You must be able to adapt and solve problems that arise quickly, think ahead to anticipate sticky points, and have a backup plan (or two) if something gets derailed.
Interpersonal communication: Your listening skills come into play as you facilitate communication in your team, de-escalate conflicts, build bridges, and figure out how to help your team do their best work together.
Collaboration: Managing game production teams requires a strong ability to collaborate within and across teams to make sure everyone has what they need to get their work accomplished well and on time.
Leadership: You manage and maintain complete production pipelines for your team. It's imperative to understand the logistics of the project from all sides, be comfortable giving direction, and also be ready to fill in where needed.
If you're eager to start learning the ins and outs of the game industry and how to manage a development team, you won't find a better education than at Champlain College.
